Objective
The Stichting Nationale Herdenking ‘s-Gravenhage aims to commemorate in a dignified manner those who died in the resistance, in service of the Dutch armed forces or the Dutch merchant navy in the years 1940-1945, or victims due to race, religion and conviction or forced labour outside the Netherlands. To this end, it organises silent marches to and gatherings at nine memorial sites in The Hague every year on 4 May.

History of the foundation
After the Netherlands was officially liberated from the German occupiers on May 5, 1945, the Dutch government decided to organize a national liberation celebration on August 31, Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday.
